Is your child living ‘cruise-life’ or ‘real-life’?

They need a bit of real-life to be ready for it, when they grow up.

Many parents tell me how busy their child is. Their life might be so jam-packed with after-school activities and other events, that they have no time to do chores, or a part time job, or do their own washing, even if the child is in university.

I don’t doubt that many children are busy. But, for me, there is a critical question. Are they busy with “real life” or are they busy with “cruise life”? Let me explain the difference.

For those readers who have been on a cruise, you will know something about what life is like when on the ship. Every day there is a lot to do on the activity schedule. Today it might be sunrise yoga, a gameshow competition, and an art class. And that’s all before lunch. Later, there might be boot scooting lessons, a miniature golf competition, a sunset happy hour, and then a special 80s-themed fun night.

And once that schedule comes through on your phone or under the door, you might want to take advantage of it all. You might race from one end of the ship to the other, smiling and laughing all the way.

There might be many moments on board you pause, and think to yourself, “Why don’t I do more yoga, dancing, and art classes?”…
